PlayFirst at Casual Connect: It Pays to Hire Women in Games Panel

This year the Gamesauce Conference premiered, the day before Casual Connect, July 19. It's a conference for game developers "intended to get you to stop doing for a few minutes so that you might spend a little time thinking. Thinking about your place and your purpose and your passion."

I proposed a panel for the Leadership and Development track of the conference, which was organized by Women in Games International (WIGI), IGDA Women in Games & WIG Vancouver. The organizers wanted a panel on "the benefits of hiring women in the game industry". My plan was to gather several awesome and talented women in the biz, get them talking, and let their achievements speak for themselves.  The panel was very positive since all of us have had really positive experiences in the industry, as people (not just as women).

Meet the producer of The Fifth Gate

Meet Alena, the producer behind The Fifth Gate! Alena gathered seeds of ideas, plowed story plots, smacked pesky bugs, and grew The Fifth Gate into the lush time management game it is today. All her friends blame her for getting them addicted to the game, something that she's happy to be the cause of!

What can people look forward to in The Fifth Gate?

There are million ways to play and win and it’s really up to the player which strategy to follow. You can plant many flowers that will give you a bigger harvest at the price of water and the time you spend managing them. Alternatively, you can plant less flowers that will give you less harvest, but you'll need fewer resources to take care of them. Your choice!

Top 3 Tips: How to get Expert Scores in Diner Dash iPhone

Want to score at expert levels on Diner Dash iPhone? Here are our top 3 tips to racking up those points:

  1. The podium is very important. Once you get the podium, you should use it often. To activate the podium, you need to send Flo to it to talk to the guests in line. Watch the heart meter! When it fills up and explodes, everyone in line will gain a heart boost. If you leave before the heart meter fills up, you will not get the podium bonus.

Corax_Vox on gardening

Ever since I was little, I had very fond memories of my mother and father’s gardens.

I’m from Northern Illinois, a fairly large city. My parents gardens were award winning. I don’t mean that as a figure of speech either -- my parents actually won city awards for their landscaping. My dad always had a fantastic garden as well and we were always stuck eating a ton of squash, zucchini, and broccoli after the harvests.

The thing I will never forget is the flowers. My mom loved the climbing morning glories, tall crimson canna lily, and marigolds leading up to the house’s main steps. Living in Northern Illionis, we had very hard long winters, with a lot of snowfall. I always thought my folks were a little mad, digging up over 15,000 square feet of flowers to bring them inside, tucked safely into garbage bags to sleep the winter away in the basement.

It wasn’t until recently that I, myself, picked up the gardening bug. I’ve always had a bit of a brown thumb. The only thing I’ve ever managed to keep alive was a cactus, and that was because to keep it alive you basically need to forget it exists. Then, when you’re dusting one day, you find it and go “Oh! I need to water this!” and pour a bit of water in until the next time you spring clean.

When I got married, I married a man who adores gardening. He grew up in the woods, with a mother who believed in helping reclaim natural areas. He began to show me how to actually grow things.
